Our reading story was about him, our spelling words came from that story, and we all wrote “I Have a Dream” speeches too! We read several short biographies and also watched a short documentary about him as well, and learned all sorts of interesting facts! Please make sure to ask your child about these! What an amazing man with an amazing message of peace…

In Math this week, third grade continued with multiplication. We learned how to use a multiplication table and made flash cards to study at home and school. We practiced multiplying by 4’s and 5’s. There are some neat websites called www.multiplication.com and www.arcademicskillbuilders.com that will let the children play games and learn their facts at the same time! Fourth graders finished up their unit about graphs and tested today.

In Language Arts this week, we read a story called Happy Birthday, Dr. King. The children really enjoyed learning about Dr. King from the perspective of a young boy about their age. Both grades also continued work on their persuasive essays. These will be due in two weeks.

In Religion this week, we discussed the story about when Jesus was tempted I the wilderness by Satan. We looked up many verses that remind us turn to God when we are tempted or in trouble. After reading 1 Corinthians 10:13 today, we were reminded that God will never give us more than we can bear and that He will be with us to stand under us and support us. All of the children have expressed some interest in purchasing the devotion book that I use every day for our classroom devotions! They love it! It is a 365 Day Devotion book, and Miss Lydia can get them to you for $5.00 if you would like to purchase one! Please just send the money to school in a labeled envelope, and I will take care of that for you! Thanks!

In P.E. this week we finally got finished “Crossing the River!” They had so much fun trying to get their families and belongings to the other side without falling in! We also played a game called “Keepers of the Castle,” which is a fun game of tag and strategy!

We will be celebrating the 100th day of School on January 30th! I cannot believe this day is already here! I do not have the kids bring 100 items to school, but if they would like to bring a snack or something to share, that is fine! We will be doing fun 100 activities all day long! Good times in the 3rd/4th grader room!

Please Remember: Our Mission Project this year is to raise money to help Martin Luther School in Joplin, MO. Our goal this month is to see who can raise more: the girls or the boys! What fun!

Thank you!
Blessings,
Kim Myers

Newsletter for The Week of January 13th...

We have had a fun week at school! This week we have been so busy…please read below to see what we have been up to!

In Math this week, third grade began multiplication! WooHoo! They were so very excited! We made arrays of them and have learned the 0’s, 1’s, 2’s and 3’s. We made flash cards today to practice at home and have begun multiplication mad minutes so we can start to memorize these! They are doing great! Fourth grade learned how to make double-bar graphs, pie graphs, and line graphs this week.

In Language Arts this third graders read a story about Ramona and Beezus! They loved getting to know these characters! The fourth graders read a story about ecology and saving the earth. They learned a lot of new facts that were really quite moving! Along with this, both grades learned how to write persuasive essays and chose topics to begin their writing. Many fourth graders used things about the earth that they feel strongly about. We will be excited to share these with you in their complete stages.

This week in English, we talked about verbs in the present tense and practiced using these in writing. Also, third graders shared their book reports this week! They are great! Fourth graders will have their turn at the end of the month.

In Religion this week, we reviewed the birth of Christ, and the many gifts God has given to us, as His beloved children. We are learning the Commandments and their meanings in Memory. The children are doing well!

In P.E. this week we played called “Crossing the River.” Each family of pioneers had to cross the river with their family and an assortment of materials. No one could touch the river, or they would have to go back to shore and start again. The object was to get your family and belongings to the other side without falling in! Neither team succeeded, so we will again next week! The teamwork and brainstorming I am witnessing is amazing! It is crazy, but we had fun!

In Science this week, we talked about animals and their habitats, as well as their camouflage and how some are mimicries. Yesterday we learned all about and charted the migration of monarch butterflies. Very interesting!

Thank you so much for helping out with the Bake Sale last week. We earned about $40.00, so not quite as much as last time, but some! Please let me know your thoughts about the rest of the money needed. Would you want to pay that cost for the Earthworks field trip, or should we try one more sale? Thank you for letting me know!

Please Remember: Our Mission Project this year is to raise money to help Martin Luther School in Joplin, MO. Our goal this month is to see who can raise more: the girls or the boys! What fun!

Have an amazing and fun weekend!
Blessings,
Kim Myers

Newsletter for the Week of January 6th...

It is so great to be back at school! I have missed the children so very much! I hope all of you had a relaxing Christmas break, and were able to enjoy some time with your families… God has blessed us all so much! The highlight from our week has definitely been our new student, who is not so new to all of us! Ian Gannan has joined our third grade class, and we are so happy to have him here! He is such a wonderful addition to our class! Welcome, Ian!
In Math this week, both grades finished up units that we began before break, and tested over them today. The third graders reviewed telling time, and using calendars and schedules. The fourth graders reviewed mean, median, and mode, and practiced using different types of graphing skills.
In Language Arts this week we reviewed how to edit sentences and practiced this a lot in our writing! We both had interesting reading stories this week. The third graders read a story entitled Aero and Officer Mike. This was a story about a police officer and his dog, and all that it takes to train him and make him a special dog that rescues people! It was really exciting! The fourth graders read a story entitled The Life and Times of the Ant, and this was also very informative. We learned more about ants and the way they live, than we have ever known before! As an assignment each week, your child is to come home and read their selection out loud. They can just read a part of the story out loud and the rest silently, if this is more their style. I have told them that they can read to you, their siblings, their pets, or their mirror, but they need to read out loud for practice. This will help them with the words, and also with their comprehension, and reviewing the story. We have a test over each selection on Fridays. Please encourage your child to do this each week!
Book reports are due soon! Both groups are reading historical fiction books. Third graders’ are due at the end of the quarter, which is next Friday, January 13th, and fourth graders’ are due at the end of January, January 31st.
We have also been doing a lot of journal writing this week! In one of the entries, your child was asked to write about New Years’ resolutions. These were great! Make sure you ask your child what he or she wrote, or ask to see their journals! What sweet, thoughtful kids we have!
In Religion this week, we have been talking about the story of Ruth and Naomi, and the great love, and friendship they had for one another. I love this story! It is such a good reminder of how much God loves us, and in turn, how much we should love and lift up one another!
In P.E. this week we played a game called Bowling Dodge ball, with a bunch of pins and a bunch of balls! The children really enjoyed it. We also spent some time outside, just enjoying this fabulous January weather! It is crazy, but we had fun!
We have finally returned to our Science books! We have begun the unit about animals, and next week will learn about plants. Your child will be bringing some vocabulary cards home to study. These will be words they will need to know for their test in a few weeks. I will keep you updated as we progress through the chapter.
Thank you so much for helping out with the Bake Sale that will take place tonight at our home basketball games! The kids have been excited to help earn money for Earthworks, and it is neat to see them take so much ownership in this task.
Please Remember: Our Mission Project this year is to raise money to help Martin Luther School in Joplin, MO. Our goal this month is to see who can raise more: the girls or the boys! What fun!

Have a great weekend!
God's Blessings,
Kim Myers

Merry Christmas!

Have a very Merry CHRISTmas and Happy New Year! <img style="display: block; Conrad was a great mayor and Victoria was a wonderful Bank President! All of the students worked hard making and selling their products, and writing paychecks, and counting out money at the bank. All shops paid off their loans, and the kiddos learned so much about supply and demand, cooperating with one another, and spending their money wisely! What a great day!

The Advent Services on Wednesday night were beautifully done! The children helped Pastor Rich share the message of Jesus beautifully! I was so proud of our Bible Reading skit. Our children portrayed the story of Jesus so well, and sang so beautifully! Thank you for all of your time and help! I would like to give a special “thank you” from our class, to Conrad’s grandma, Sharon Jobe, for helping with and making our costumes. They were gorgeous...fuzzy haired wise men and all!

Next Tuesday, December 20th, we are going bowling at Lunar Bowl and are going to sing at Blue Springs Manor. If you have not returned your child’s permission slip yet, please do so. We still need drivers! Thank you so much!

Next Wednesday, December 21st, our class is going to have a Polar Express Party. Your child may wear his or her pjs to school. (Please send tennis shoes). Your child may bring a pillow or a blanket or sleeping bag too, and a snack to share with the class, if he or she chooses! We will have hot chocolate and watch the movie in our classroom! Fun times!

In Math this week the third graders worked hard with telling time, identifying A.M. and P.M., and telling elapsed time. Fourth graders worked with mean, median and mode, and line plots this week. They are working hard and learning new things!

In Language Arts this week we talked about verbs and found them in sentences and in our writing. Our spelling tests and Reading tests for this unit will be on Wednesday, the 14th. Please urge your child to read their book report books over Christmas break! Thank you!

In Religion this week, we have been talking about the 10 commandments and how they apply to our lives. We have learned the meanings of them and are talking about God wants us, as Christians, to set examples for others around us in all we say, think, and do.

In P.E. this week we continued with basketball skills! We continued to work on skills and played a few games of scrimmage!

Thank you so much for giving to our friend in need! We got so many gifts for our boy (tons of cars and toys) and our girl (dolls, socks, and art supplies), that I know Christmas will be very special for them this year! Our kids have really learned the spirit of giving!

Please Remember: Our Mission Project this year is to raise money to help Martin Luther School in Joplin, MO. Our goal this month is to raise $500.00 as a whole school, and we will be able to participate in a fun Candyland adventure. Thank you for your help!

Dates to Remember:
*December 16th-Basketball games at MLA at 6, 7, and 8 o’clock
*December 17th--Christmas Pageant rehearsal from 10:30-12:00 in gym
*December 17th and 18th-Christmas Pageant in gym 6:30 and 3:30
*December 20th-Bowling Party and caroling at St. Mary’s Manor
*December 21st-Pajama Day...Polar Express Party...1:00 dismissal to begin Christmas break…

This will be the last newsletter before Christmas break! Please have a blessed Christmas. You all will be on my heart! My prayer is that we all will enjoy this special time with our families and remember to keep the Christ Child front and center…
Yours in Christ,
Kim Myers

Newsletter for December 2nd, 2011

Happy December! We have had such a fun-filled and busy week! Wow! Today we went and saw the play “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever!” based on the book by Barbara Robinson. We read this aloud in class this week, and boy do the kids think those Herdman siblings are a riot! Today proved no different! We had a great time! A special thank you to those that were able to drive!

In Religion we finished up learning about the life of Moses. We tested over this unit yesterday and we all did well. We will watch the movie Prince of Egypt in the upcoming weeks to help us review and compare/contrast.

In Math this week we continued to have a combined 3rd/4th grade unit on money. We have reviewed how to count money, how to make change, and how to add and subtract money. We completed this unit this week and tested over our skills yesterday. The children say they are doing a great job at remembering to practice their math facts. Keep up the good work at home! Math Madness sheets are due on Mondays. This is part of their overall math grade.

In Language Arts this week we learned about different forms of plural nouns, and how to make them possessive. We also read two new stories. Third graders read the story Jump!, which is a biographical story about Michael Jordan. It was very interesting. The fourth graders read a story called The Screech Owl Who Liked Television. This was also a true story about a family who had a screech owl for a pet! Can you imagine?! Information for fourth grade book reports came home yesterday. These will be due at the end of January. Both grades will be reading historical fiction novels. Fourth graders shared their fantasy book reports and comics they created! They are so wonderful! Check them out in the hallway!
In Music this week we again concentrated on the songs that we will be sharing at the Advent service in December! We sound so beautiful! Our class will be singing and reenacting the Christmas story from the Bible, so please mark your calendars. The services are December 14th at 5:00 and 7:15.

In P.E. this week we continued with basketball skills! We continued to work on skills and played a few games of scrimmage! We are getting quite good and learning great sportsmanship skills.

In Art this week, we made Christmas snow scenes that will hang in the South 7 Highway Mid-Continent Public Library this month. If you have time, swing by and check them out. Art work from all grades of Timothy Lutheran will be on display there. We also finished up our Special Moments pictures and these are in display in the hallway. We had fun decorating our classroom with Christmas decorations and paper chains as well!

For Social Studies during the next few weeks, we will be learning about economics. As your child has probably told you, we (grades 3rd-6th) will be visiting the School of Economics on December 14th, and are preparing by having job interviews (today), and meeting with our shops, deciding on what items to buy, how much we should price our items, discussing supply and demand, how to advertise, and how to count money and make change! This is such a great learning opportunity for the students and we are all very excited! I will keep you posted on the new things we learn each day. Permission slips are coming home today, so please look for this in Friday Folders.

Please Remember: Our Mission Project this year is to raise money to help Martin Luther School in Joplin, MO. Our goal this month is to raise $500.00 as a whole school, and we will be able to participate in a fun Candyland adventure. This is an amazing field trip that incorporates science, social studies, math, and reasoning skills as kids investigate and learn from habitats that are native to Kansas and Missouri. The facility gives us the units to teach four weeks at school and then we go there on a one day trip where we get to spend time in the habitats with other student scientists from other schools.
Below is some information about Earthworks. You can also see amazing pictures on their website at www.lx.org/ .

EarthWorks - Kansas City’s Premier Experiential Science Learning Program, Student Grades 3-5

EarthWorks is a laboratory that comes to life when young people take on the role of scientists who work to determine the health of a habitat. Scientific teams collaborate to determine whether a habitat can continue to sustain life.

Program Goals:
EarthWorks provides a challenging academic experience aligned to the Missouri and Kansas State Standards and uses research-based instructional strategies throughout the program curriculum.

EarthWorks provides an immersive real-world experience that fosters active learning through an integrated Science/Communication Arts curriculum.

EarthWorks provides learning opportunities for students to make effective decisions as environmental scientists, and participants in a complex natural environment.

EarthWorks provides an opportunity for students to collaborate and problem solve in authentic Mid-Western habitats and field laboratories.

This field trip/science curriculum is $20.00 a student. I would like to try to offset this cost for you by raising money through a bake sale that we will have set up at all of our home basketball games which are, 12/9. 1/6, and 1/27. If you are willing, please send bake goods to school on those days. It would be helpful if you could package them separately in baggies, so they are easier for a sale. I will also need a parent volunteer and child volunteer that would be willing to be there to collect money for these. Please let me know if you are interested in either of these ideas, or if you would just rather pay the Earthworks fee! I would love your thoughts and ideas! Thank you for your help in this manner!
Blessings.
Mrs. Myers

Christmas Gifts...

Hello Parents! This is a little early, but I know some of you get a head start Christmas shopping, so I wanted to give you the heads up! This year instead of buying gifts for each other in the classroom, the third and fourth grades have decided to buy gifts for children in need. I have chosen two nametags off the “Giving Tree” in the hallway outside of our gym, and your child can either purchase a small, inexpensive gift for this child, or can donate money toward that child’s wish. We are so excited about this! Many of the kids have asked if they can donate their allowance, and/or buy big gifts! I am floored by their generosity and excitement! What awesome witnesses of Jesus’ love they are…I have told them to talk to you about this and to pray about these things first, and if you are so moved, you can donate a small amount to our classroom project, and then take another name off the trees for your family. Thank you so much!
Please send gifts and/or gifts cards to school by December 9th. We will wrap them here at school, and then they will be given at the church services on the 10th and 11th. Thank you in advance for all you can do to help!
Here are details about our “kids:”
There is a 7 year old son who would like Matchbox cars and puzzles.
There is daughter who is 5 and loves arts supplies and needs colored socks (wears size 9 shoe).
If it is a wish to donate money or give a gift card to the family, one to Wal-Mart would be great.

Thank you and God’s Blessings!
Kim Myers

Newsletter from 11-18-11: Have a GREAT Weekend! :)

Hello, Parents! We have had such a fun week learning all we can about the first Thanksgiving! Hopefully, you have gotten an ear-full of all we have been doing in here! Each child “became” a Pilgrim or Indian and made up a new name for the week. We built Pilgrim homes and learned how to barter like the Indians. We had so much fun learning some neat facts about what happened at the first Thanksgiving and the events leading up to it. Our unit will end in a feast next Tuesday at 11:00. If your child has not signed up to bring a dish yet, please do so. I have the sign-up in the hallway, or you can just email me! Right now, we have enough desserts, but really need some side dishes. Thank you so much!

In Religion we continue to study Moses and right now are focusing on the 10 Plagues and the Israelites and their exodus out of Egypt. Yesterday we discussed how in many ways we are like Pharaoh and his hard heart. We all have times that we turn our backs on God. Vicar Rod talked about some of these things during Chapel this week, and reminded us that God forgives and loves us despite these times of weakness. We most focus on our breastplate of righteousness!

In Math this week we had a combined 3rd/4th grade unit on money. We have reviewed how to count money, how to make change, and how to add and subtract money. We will continue this next week. The children say they are doing a great job at remembering to practice their math facts. Keep up the good work at home! Math Madness sheets are due Monday.

In Language Arts we read two stories together! We read On the Mayflower and Across the Wide, Dark Sea, both stories about the Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving. Our spelling words this week came from these selections, so we did a lot of spelling fun, and we also completed fun vocabulary activities. These were neat stories, full of facts!
Information for your child’s book reports came home a few weeks ago, as well as the historical fiction (3rd grade) and the fantasy (4th grade) book he or she has begun to read. Please remind your child to read at home. Thanks! Third graders have until the end of the quarter and fourth graders have until the end of the month! Work hard!
We have also been working on our written descriptions. These are due November 30th.

We learned how to shoot free throws more effectively and play games of P-I-G! We even had a little tournament! Jordan Richards is the official 3rd/4th grade P-I-G champion, with Conrad Brunkhorst in a close second!

In Art this week, we made turkeys from construction paper and finger paint. They are so cute! The children want me to make these into placemats, so I am, and we will be sending these home next week.

Please Remember: Our Mission Project this year is to raise money to help Martin Luther School in Joplin, MO. Our goal this month is to raise $500.00 as a whole school, and we will be able to participate in a fun Candyland adventure. We are already at the Thank you for your help!

Have a blessed weekend!
Yours in Christ,
Kim Myers

Happy Veterans' Day!

Happy Veterans' Day to all of those veterans who have served our country! It was such a pleasure meeting with each of you at conferences last week. Thank you for your kind words and open minds. I am so thankful for each of you…and blessed!

We had a fabulous week! Today we talked about Veteran’s Day, and earlier this week the kids were able to write to veterans that they know. Thank you to all the dads and special people who joined us for Donuts With Dad on Wednesday morning. We had a great time sharing our descriptive writing and working on our veteran letters…and enjoying donuts too! We have been busy this week, so please look below for details!

In Religion we studied Moses and his birth. We have contrasted and compared his life to the life of Jesus Christ in that they both had rulers that wanted to kill them, they both had people in their lives that loved them and wanted to protect them, and they both freed their people from something. The comparisons stopped there, though. The children were quick to point out that Moses was indeed a sinner, and he received all of his help form the Lord. Jesus is Lord! He fought over death and the power of the devil for us, because of His great love for us!

In Math, this week we had some struggles. As I shared at conferences, third graders continued their chapter on borrowing and regrouping. This has been difficult for most of them. They are still struggling. Most of their errors are not in the process of regrouping, but with their math facts. I have told the kids that I expect them to study their math facts at home, so they can do well at school. The intensity and difficulty of math problems is only going to increase and they need to know these. We work on this as much as possible in school: quizzing one another, taking mad minutes, and working with one another in free time. Most of this is just rote memorization, however, that needs to be done with flash cards, computer games, or just saying them out loud.

Fourth graders continued to work on telling time and working with variables as well. They tested over both of these skills this week and have improved their test scores.

Both grade levels struggle with their math facts, so I am going to begin making the kids more accountable for this. As part of their math grade, each child will need to practice flash cards, play a math fact computer game, or just go over facts with mom and dad for 25 minutes a week. This is five minutes a night. I am sending a chart home today. It will count as a test grade in the grade book each week. This is an easy “A” and their facts will improve too!

As an incentive, I have also told the kids that pass their math facts this year…which will be addition, subtractions, multiplication, and division facts, through tens…that they can join me in an after-school trip to Winstead’s to enjoy ice cream sodas/sundaes. This will be a privilege earned. We just have to get these down as we approach the later math years! I want their struggles to stop! Thank you so much for your help and in this matter. Please let me know if you have questions.

In Language Arts we talked about antonyms and practiced these all week. Both groups of readers also read biographies. Third grade read about young Thomas Edison and fourth graders read about Jose Limon. These were so interesting! They helped get the children very interested in biographies!
As I mentioned earlier, this week we have begun writing descriptions. Each child must use their sense to write a description about a person, pet, or event in their lives. We are in the drafting stages of these, but they are turning out quite well! These are due November 30th.
Information for your child’s book reports came home last week, as well as the historical fiction (3rd grade) and the fantasy (4th grade) book he or she has begun to read. Please remind your child to read at home. Thanks! Third graders have until the end of the quarter and fourth graders have until the end of the month! Work hard!
In Music this week we again concentrated on the songs that we will be sharing at the Advent services in December! We sound so beautiful! Our class will have a big part in the service, so please mark your calendar. The service is December 14th at 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. We will be singing and be acting out the parts to the Bible reading.

In P.E. this week we continued with basketball sills! We learned how to shoot layups and free throws. We completed several drills with these skills. By the time we are finished with this unit, we should be good little basketball players!

In Art this week, we studied the art of Mary Engelbreit. We had some quiet, reflective time to think about our happiest moment ever, and then we illustrated pictures about them! We then continued to watercolor them and add details with marking pens. They are fabulous! Be on the lookout for these in our fantastic hallway of art!

Please Remember: Our Mission Project this year is to raise money to help Martin Luther School in Joplin, MO. Our goal this month is to raise $500.00 as a whole school, and we will be able to participate in a fun Candyland adventure. We are already at the Thank you for your help!
Dates to Remember:
*November 14-3rd grade health screenings 9:00
*November 21-“Seeing Miracles in Disaster” with Jeremy Schamber at 7:00 in the gym
*November 22-Chapel with Mr. Schamber at 8:45/3rd and 4th Thanksgiving Feast 11:00
*November 23-23-No School—Thanksgiving Break
*December 2nd-Field trip to Theatre of Young America 9:00-12:00
*December 2nd-baskebtall games at Trinity, Atchison 6:00 and 7:00.

Have a blessed weekend!
Yours in Christ,
Kim Myers

Fall Party--October 28th!

<img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; Thank you for sharing your precious children with me. They are such a joy to teach. It was fun visiting with each of you and updating you on what we have been up to here in the land of third and fourth graders!

As I shared at conferences, third graders will be continuing our chapter on borrowing and regrouping next week. This has been a difficult process for most of them. Fourth graders will continue to work on telling time and working with variables as well. Their time test that has come home today is not their best! So, we will work on these concepts all next week, and retake the test on Friday. This new grade will replace their old one! You will see some extra work coming home next week for both grade levels, so we can really get these skills down! Thank you for working with your child!

Information for your child’s book reports came home this week, as well as the historical fiction (3rd grade) and the fantasy (4th grade) book he or she has begun to read. Please remind your child to read at home. Thanks!

Here is a quick update of upcoming events:
*November4- 1:00 Dismissal Parent/Teacher Conferences
November 7- Picture Retake Day
*November 8- Barnes and Noble Night
*November 9- Donuts with Dad 7:45-8:15
*November 22nd-Classroom Thanksgiving Feast…more details to come!
*November 23-23-No School—Thanksgiving Break
*December 2nd-Field trip to Theatre of Young America 9:00-12:30…permission slip to come home next week.
Blessings on your weekend!
Kim Myers

Newsletter From October 21st

Hello, Parents! We have had a wonderful week of school! We have been busy this week creating, learning, and exploring! We had an awesome devotion this morning about how we all need to make sure we are setting the example to lean on Jesus in times of need. He is always present with us and He needs to be our Strong Tower. I am sending this devotion home today. The children and I really resonated with it!

In Religion this week we discussed Joseph. Many of the kids expressed that this is their favorite Bible story, and they were so excited to learn about him and to share the information they knew. We talked about how his brothers sold him into slavery, how God had a plan for him with his time in prison, and interpreting dreams, as well as when he helped to save the people of Egypt from the famine that hit their land. He was a wise and wonderful ruler, and we learned so much from him.

Next week, we will take a break from our regular Religion series, and will begin our Reformation unit about the life of Martin Luther and the impact he had on our church and all of Christianity.

In Math, third graders are learning about fact families, and are talking about how to subtract longer-digit numbers. Fourth graders are working with telling time, and finding the elapsed time in certain situations. Please continue to work with your child on their math facts at home: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Thank you!

In Language Arts this week, we talked about singular and plural nouns and went on a hunt for these! We also read neat stories about what illustrators do and what movie-makers do to make movies interesting and fun! This made our creative juices flow as we worked on our personal narratives and read for our book reports this week! We are busy!
In Music this week we concentrated on the songs that we will be sharing at the Advent service in December! We sound so beautiful! We also practiced some of our favorite guitar songs with Mrs. Mundt and the song we will be singing in church in January…it is an a cappella!

In P.E. this week we tested our thinking skills by playing Capture the Flag and Man from Mars. These are both fun strategic games. What fun!

In Art this week, we studied the artwork of Eric Carle. We read several of his books, and then created our own masterpieces in his style! These are coming home today for you to view and to see if you want to have this art put on any items to purchase. This is a fund raiser for our school through a company called Original Works, so be on the lookout for these in backpacks! J

Please Remember: Our Mission Project this year is to raise money to help Martin Luther School in Joplin, MO. This money will go toward their financial aide. Our project this month is to collect gift cards for Joplin, from places that they need supplies from. 3rd/4th grade is on a roll! Your child has been asked to pray about what he or she might want to give, and to bring these in this month. Thank you for your help!
Blessings,
Kim Myers

Reminders!

Students, we have some assignments that are quickly approahing that I wanted to remind you of:

October 28th-Third grade book reports are due.
October 31st-Fourth grade book reports are due.
October 31st-Personal narratives in their final, published stage are due.

Thank you! :)

Newsletter from the Week of October 7th

Hello, Parents! We have had a wonderful week of school! Thank you so much for your birthday gifts and treats. They children have made me feel so loved! They were so sweet with their cards and kind words. Today we had fun remembering Mrs. Vogt’s birthday as well!

In Religion this week we discussed Jacob. We learned about how God took care of him when he fled from home, after tricking his father and Esau. We learned about how he spent the next years of his life, how he married, and ultimately how he returned home and received Esau’s forgiveness.

Next week, we will begin our Reformation unit and learn all about the life of Martin Luther.

In Math, third graders are discussing adding larger numbers and how to work word problems. Fourth graders learned the difference between expressions and equations. Today they learned how to balance equations and how to solve problems with variables.

In Language Arts this week, we learned about run-on sentences and how to correct these, as
well as how to write good, quality sentences. We are getting very good at correcting D.O.L. sentences! In Reading, we read some neat stories! The third graders read a story called Max’s Words, which was about a boy who collected words. The fourth graders read a story called Once Upon a Motorcycle Dude, which was a humorous fairy tale, that really shoed the power of writing! We will not have spelling or reading/vocabulary tests next week, as we have a super-short school week!

In Music this week we practiced our song that we are going to sing in church this Sunday, October 9th. Please meet in the Music Room at the North Site at 8:50. We sing at the beginning of the 9:15 and 11:00 services. Thank you! We sound so beautiful!

In P.E. we continued to play different versions of dodge ball this week outdoors. We learned how to play Bombardment and Poisonball! They were so much fun!

In Art this week, we made woven pumpkins and painted a fall still life. We used viewfinders to find which part of the still life we wanted to concentrate on. These will be brightening up the hallway soon!

Please Remember: Our Mission Project this year is to raise money to help Martin Luther School in Joplin, MO. This money will go toward their financial aide. This week our own Cady Smith was part of the winning Chapel family that raised the most money for this cause. She was able to enjoy a catered lunch by the teachers. Our new project this month is to collect gift cards for Joplin, from places that they need supplies from. Your child has been asked to pray about what he or she might want to give, and to bring these in this month. Thank you for your help!

Have a wonderful weekend!
Mrs. Myers

Newsletter from September 30th, 2011

Hello, Parents! We have a great week of school…It is hard to believe that October is right around the corner… We did a wonderful job at Chapel this week with our skit about the Belt of Truth! You have such talented children!

In Religion this week we talked about Isaac and how God had a special plan for him, with his wife Rebekah. We discussed how God intends for us to choose friends, who have faith in Him, and make kind and wise choices. We also talked about families and marriage, and how the sins of greed, slander, hatred, and adultery, can rip families apart. God tells us in the Bible to focus on forgiveness and love!

In Math, third graders are learning the addition properties, how to find missing addends, and how to estimate and round. Today we learned how to add numbers in our heads to find the estimations. Fourth graders tested over the skills of estimating sums and differences, and subtracting across zeroes. They did well! J Next week they will begin learning about algebraic expressions.

In Language Arts this week, we reviewed subjects and predicates, and dividing sentences into these parts. We concentrated on verb usage, and found these in sentences. We also learned some new vocabulary and stories. Third grade read a story about the amazing baseball player Roberto Clemente. If you did not hear your third grader read this story, make sure you take some time to read it. It is great! It is amazing how much we can learn from children’s literature! The fourth graders read a story called Stormalong. This was a tall tale written by the author of The Magic Tree House series that talked about an amazing, giant sailor! It was fun to read!

In Music this week we practiced rhythm again with the song “Miss Mary Mack.” We also practiced our song that we are going to sing in church on October 9th. We sound sooo beautiful!

In P.E. we played different versions of dodgeball. On Tuesday we played Pin Dodgeball and on Thursday we learned how to play Doctor Dodgeball. There has been such a backlash in previous years about dodgeball, but we have learned how to play it safely, with skill and strategy. All of the kids are having a great time, and it is fun to see them planning with friends how to win the game. We will learn some different versions next week!

In Art this week, we worked on Fall/Halloween pictures. We watercolored the background of our picture by wetting our papers and letting the colors run and mix together. Today we added scenery with construction. They are very cool, and spooky!

We started Science this week! We began reading and learning about parts of plant and
animal cells. We will be doing several experiments with next week that will help all of this sink in! Your child will be bringing home index cards with vocabulary words on them next week. Please help them review these words as we go through the unit. This will help them during the chapter tests. Thank you.

Please Remember: Our Mission Project this year is to raise money to help Martin Luther School in Joplin, MO. This money will go toward their financial aide. Your child has been asked to pray about what he or she might want to give, and to bring these coins in on Wednesdays. Thanks!

Have a blessed weekend!
Yours in Christ,
Kim Myers

Newsletter from the Week of September 23rd!

Hello, Parents! This week flew by for all of us! Wow! We have been busy this week learning and creating!

We lead Chapel next Wednesday, September 28th. We will be doing several skits that talk about the Belt of Truth. This is part of yearlong series about wearing the Armor of God! Please come and join us if you can!

In Religion this week we talked about Abraham, Sarah, and Lot. We talked about the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, and the sin that was prevalent there. We talked about the sin that is in our world, and how often we are intrigued by it and drawn to it. We need to rely on God and His infinite wisdom to know the difference between right and wrong. God is always beside us, leading us in the right direction!

In Math, third grade is learning how to round! This week we learned how to round to the nearest ten, hundred, and thousand. This took some practice, but our light bulbs popped on this week! J We reviewed yesterday and tested over the concept today. Fourth graders are learning how estimate and how to add and subtract 4-digit numbers, and subtract across the zeroes with borrowing. This is review from last year, with harder problems. We will complete this chapter next week.

In Social Studies this week, e made Missouri books. We will be filling these in with all of the facts about Missouri that we can come up with. We received some neat materials from the capital, and have been learning so many new things. Next week, we begin science!

In Language Arts this week, we learned about subjects and predicates, and dividing sentences into these parts. We concentrated on verb usage, and found these in sentences. We also learned some new vocabulary and stories. Third grade read a story about the building of the Golden Gate Bridge, entitled My Pop’s Bridge and the fourth graders read a play called The Power of W.O.W.! This was a play about saving a library on wheels and they put it on for the 3rd graders and for me today! We have a classroom of quite a few little actors and actresses! It was great!
In Music this week we practiced rhythm! We used rhythm sticks to find the rhythm in fun music and we also practiced our song that we are going to sing in church on September 9th. We are definitely a singing class…we enjoy it so much!

In P.E. this week we reviewed body movements such as skipping, hopping, jumping, galloping, jogging, crawling, crab-walking, spinning, and other fun movements. On Tuesday, we used these skills to play Road Race and yesterday, we used these skills to play a fun version of PacMan!

Art this was an extension of last week, as we painted our monsters from Where the Wild Things Are with different values of one primary color. Once these amazing creatures are dry, we will cut these out and add them to our jungle-themed room! Pretty cool!

Please Remember: Our Mission Project this year is to raise money to help Martin Luther School in Joplin, MO. This money will go toward their financial aide. Your child has been asked to pray about what he or she might want to give, and to bring these coins in on Wednesdays. J-E-S-U-S!
Hello, Parents! We have had another enjoyable week. Your children are working so hard, and I am proud of their efforts. This week we focused a lot on our friendships…how to support and uplift one another. These children are great at that, and my prayer is that it will just become a habit, and they will focus on treating one another as Brothers and Sisters in Christ. (We sang that song in Chapel this week! ) We began the week by reviewing September 11, 2001, and writing prayers and remembrances in a book. It is beautiful and will be on display at teacher conferences for you to view.

In Religion this week we discussed the stories of Abram and Sarai (Abraham and Sarah) and talked about God’s covenant with Abram. We were inspired by his great faith, and discussed situations where we needed to put our trust in the Heavenly Father, instead of what we may have thought to be best. We also retraced Abram’s journey from Hebron to Canaan, and learned about his voyage there.

In Math this week third graders worked with comparing and ordering numbers in the ten and hundred thousands, and they also worked with rounding numbers to the nearest ten and hundred. This will take some more practice before we are experts! Any practice you can do on this skill at home would be beneficial. We will finish up this unit next week. Fourth graders took their test over comparing and ordering numbers today and did very well. They will begin their chapter on estimating and adding and subtracting larger numbers next week. Zooming right along!

In Social Studies we learned about the plants, animals, and people of Missouri. We finished
reading this chapter, and completed the review on Thursday. We will have a test over this on Monday. Students will bring home their vocabulary cards to study. If they are familiar with these terms, they will do just fine! We will begin our first Science unit next week.

In Language Arts this week, third and fourth graders read the stories Destiny’s Gift and How Tia Lola Came to Stay, respectively. These were both great stories about friendship and giving. The kids really enjoyed these and the vocabulary words accompanying them. In English, we reviewed the parts of a sentence and learned how to use periods, question marks, and exclamation marks effectively. We reviewed what commands were. Next week, we will focus on subjects, predicates, and good handwriting! The students also had to correct papers with editing symbols again this week. This will be a weekly lesson, and they are slowly getting better! If you see that your child needs more practice with this skill, please let me know, and I can send home extra work to practice. This will be a skill that is needed later in their writing, as the mature.

In Music this week we had a lot of fun! On Tuesday, we practiced the song that we will be singing in church on September 9th. We also learned some other new songs with Mrs. Mundt and her guitar. She is so talented! On Thursday, we went over music notes, learned about beat, and practiced our singing the notes in our song.

In P.E. we finished up our unit in volleyball yesterday with a scrimmage! The children are getting better at their serving, passing, and setting, but most of all, with their good sportsmanship.

Art this week was fun! We began by reading the story Where the Wild Things Are and listened to a poem entitled, “One Summer Night.” These helped imagine silly, goofy monsters, and the ways our mind plays tricks on us when we are tired or see things in the dark. We then created our own silly monsters on paper. Next week we will paint these using different shades of one color…and then we will add them to our jungle…because, as we all know THIS is where the Wild Things Are!

Please remember that we still need volunteers to help clean tables at the Fall Fun Fest. Your help appreciated. Our school receives payment for this service. Thank you!

Our Mission Project this year is to raise money to help Martin Luther School in Joplin, MO. This money will go toward their financial aide. Your child has been asked to pray about what he or she might want to give, and to bring these coins in on Wednesdays. Thanks!

Have a blessed weekend!
Yours in Christ,
Kim Myers

Newsletter From the Week of September 9th!

Who's the King of the Jungle? J-E-S-U-S
Hello, Parents! We have had an amazing and fun week! I hope you enjoyed the day off with your families! We have been busy this week learning and creating…and having a great time!

In Religion this week we continued to talk about the story of Noah’s Ark. We read Bible verses that talked about God’s Blessings and gifts. We learned the word “covenant” and talked about the different kinds of covenants we make with one another. We especially are thankful for our amazing God’s covenants with us: If we believe in Him, we will be able to join him in heaven someday. He also promised that He will always be with us! What amazing covenants!

In Math this week both grades worked with comparing and ordering numbers. Third graders finished learned about 5 and 6 digit numbers and took their first math test today! They did well! The fourth graders continue to learn about larger numbers and placing them in order, and finding the value of certain digits. I have heard several comments about how 4th grade math is harder than last year! It is…but they are doing SO well!

In Social Studies we are continuing to learn about Missouri! This week we discussed the different regions of Missouri: the Glacial Plains, the Western Plains, the Ozark Highlands, and the Southeast Lowlands. Today we also discussed the climate of Missouri and the animals that are native to our region. We are learning so much! There is a lot of vocabulary for this unit, so be on the lookout of a review sheet to come home!

In Language Arts this week, we have been having some fun and learning new words! Be sure to look for reading and spelling tests to come home today! The children are doing so well! Spelling words incorporated long and short vowel l sounds, so we have spent some time reviewing those. This week the third graders read a story that introduced us to a courtroom setting. It was entitled The Trial of Cardigan Jones. It was so interesting! The fourth graders read My Brother Martin, and we had some wonderful conversations about this story! It was written by MLK’s sister, and it was a neat tribute to him! In English this week, we talked about what makes a sentence and practiced making some on our own. In Writers’ Workshop, the children had fun taking story parts and combining them to make silly stories! You will have to ask them about their creations! Many asked me for the website to this fun “game” we played so they could write more stories at home. How could I resist?! It’s http://teacher.scholastic.com/activities/storystarters/storystarter1.htm. Very cool! There have been some questions about the book log, so I will try to answer them and keep you up to speed! Please record any books that your child reads at home, from school, the library, or the local library, on his or her book log. If it has a Scholastic quiz that goes with it, your child can take that quiz here at school or at home. You just need to record that on the sheet so I am aware. I am asking that your child read 5 books a quarter on his or her reading level. If you are uncertain what the level is or if the book has a quiz, you can have her bring it in, or you can check this website. :http://bookwizard.scholastic.com/
Thank you!

In Music this week we had a lot of fun! Every Tuesday, we join the 3rd/4th graders for choir. On Thursdays we meet as a class with Mrs. Mundt. During this time, we will learn music concepts, about the church year, and experiment with different instruments. We will also learn new songs and enjoy fun Bible action songs. This week we sang “Your Love Makes Me Sing,” “Yes, Lord!’” How Great Is Our God,” “My God is So Great,” The Butterfly Song,” “J is for Jesus,” and “You Put This Love in My Heart.” Fun!

In P.E. we are continuing to learn about volleyball skills. This week we talked about tipping, dinking, and passing the ball. We played several scrimmage games and learned how to have good sportsmanship and communication skills.

Art this week was fun! We created Animal Designs where we learned how to make an entire composition using only lines…curvy, thick, thin, straight, short, long, etc. The patterns are so beautiful! Be on the lookout for these in the hallway!

Next Week we will remember 9/11 and briefly talk about the history associated with that day in history. I have some neat stories and Bible verses to share regarding it.

Please remember that we still need volunteers to help clean tables at the Fall Fun Fest. All of the students are working hard and giving school their best efforts. I am so very proud of them!
This week in Religion, we talked about Noah, the great Flood, and God’s covenant with Noah and with us. We were reminded that God loves us very much and is always by our side.
In Math this week, both groups are working with place value and determining what each digit is worth in a number, as well as how to write numbers in standard, word, and expanded forms. Third graders are working with numbers up to the ten-thousands, and fourth graders are working with numbers up to the hundred-millions. We have been taking mad minutes daily, and all students are working hard to pass them, and achieve mastery in memorizing their math facts. We are also getting really talented at solving our Problem Solvers too...word problems! They are fun and entertaining!
In Reading this week, both grades worked on the skill of dividing a story into characters, plots, problems, and solutions. We also learned many new vocabulary words! We used these skills when we began Writers' Workshop this week! We are using the entire writing process—planning, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing, and learning a great deal! Once a story is published, it will be coming home to you, after being shared in the classroom library for awhile. After all, we all are budding authors!
We checked out our book reports on Monday. Third graders picked out mysteries, and fourth graders chose Newbery Award winners. Please make sure your child is reading his or her book report book at home. They could also be filling in their reading logs, as these books are Scholastic Reading books, as well.
On that note, I will be asking that each child finish 5 Scholastic quizzes a quarter. These books can be chapter books, or picture books on his or her reading level. This will be part of your child's reading grade, so I will help remind him or her to keep reading. Please do the same at home. The books are available in the classroom, as well as in the library. Thank you for your help!
The students took their first Social Studies test this week and did well! We have finished our first chapter about Missouri history. Thank you for helping your child fill in the oral history form. We learned so many interesting things about Missouri, just from those interviews! We have now begun to talk about the location of Missouri and the many landforms that we have here. We have talked about hemispheres, continents, countries, and now our state. We will finish up Chapter 2 nest week. The students will do well on the tests if they pay attention in class and are familiar with the vocabulary. I will always send home the words to review. Thank you!
This was the first week for Specials Classes! We had a lot of fun...but, boy, are Tuesday and Thursday afternoons busy, as we jump from one Special to another! In Art this week, we reviewed the primary, secondary, and tertiary colors, and then made color wheels. We also talked about what a horizon is, and drew pictures with horizons, rivers or roads, and houses, trees, and other things. We then added colors in the style of Impressionistic art. We finished these up today and then are so beautiful! We will need egg cartons in a couple of weeks of art. If you remember, please send in any that you may have. Thank you!
In P.E., we are learning volleyball skills, such as passing, serving, and how to play the game. We will continue this for the next couple of weeks, and will eventually play a game and keep score!
The students have Music with Mrs. Mundt, and she was so excited to hear their voices again! She had really missed singing praises every week with the kids! The student enjoyed singing a few favorites- “Here I Am to Worship”, “Big House”, “I Will Follow”, and “Allelu, Alleluia”. They are learning a few new songs, “You Put This Love In My Heart” & “You Are Holy”. Both are songs with parts. They are learning quickly! The 3rd and 4th graders are wonderful leaders!
The students also enjoyed going to Spanish class this week, and Computer Lab, where they will be practicing their skills on the program “Type to Learn. “
Reminders:
*Yearbooks available: If you did not purchase a yearbook for your child at the end of last school year, you have a new opportunity! We will be handing out and signing yearbooks after chapel on September 7th. If you would like to purchase a yearbook by this date, the cost is $13. Please talk with Mrs. Barber or Mrs. Warren.
*Our Mission Project this year is to raise money to help Martin Luther School in Joplin, MO. This money will go toward their financial aide. Your child has been asked to pray about what he or she might want to give, and to bring these coins in on Wednesdays. Thanks!
Thank you for all of your support already this school year! I am excited about this partnership with you…
Have a super weekend! God’s Blessings!

Kim Myers

Newsletter From August 26, 2011

Dear Parents,
It has been a great first week of school! We have had a great time reconnecting and sharing stories with one another. What a great bunch of kids!
This week has basically been a "getting to know you" type of week for us. On Tuesday, we played several name games and wrote about our summer vacations. After I read the funny stories called The Teacher from the Black Lagoon, and What I Did on Summer Vacation, the kids were able to ask me anything they wanted to about me. We also took a tour around the classroom to learn about everything in it. It was fun seeing the kids’ excitement for the school year!
On Wednesday, we made our Time Capsule to be opened the last day of school! We were weighed and measured, and we traced our hands and feet. We also made and added interest inventories, lists about our likes and dislikes, and self-portraits to the capsules. We began math by taking a mad minute and doing a problem solver, which will be done every day. In Art, the children created "Who Am I?" faces. These are hanging in the hallway, so be sure to come by and check them out.
Yesterday, we wrote in our journals for the first time, which was fun! We also read in the Bible about the Creation story and today we began making creation books which we will hang in our classroom. They are turning out so beautifully! In Math, we reviewed fact families. All of the students are doing so well! J We began a book by our Author of the Month, Judy Blume, entitled Tales of a Fourth Grade nothing. The children are enjoying the antics of Peter and his little brother, Fudge! He is so mischievous! We also wrote Bio-poems today. These are beautiful and will on display soon!
Today, the we said our first memory verse, Galatians 5:22, and all of the children said it without a hitch! Today we also created the rules and expectations for the year. We actually summed it up into one expectation: Be respectful, kind, and polite to God, others, and yourself. It really does encompass it all doesn’t it?! We wrote this on poster paper and all signed it.
The children will have spelling words beginning next week.
Your child’s individual spelling list will come home on Mondays. The children will have a pretest every Monday. This will give them a good idea which words to focus on. We will practice these words in the classroom nearly every day. We will put the words in ABC order, put them in sentences, and look them up in the dictionary. On Fridays, the kids will have a post-test over these words. There will also be a challenge word that they can practice. This work can only help get extra credit on tests. It will not hinder them if they do not spell it right.
We will start full force in Language Arts, Reading, Math, and Social Studies next week. We are all excited!
Just a Reminder: Yearbooks available: if you did not purchase a yearbook for your child at the end of last school year, you have a new opportunity! We will be handing out and signing yearbooks after chapel on September 7th. If you would like to purchase a yearbook by this date, the cost is $13. Please talk with Mrs. Barber or Mrs. Warren.

Thank you for already being such supportive and great parents! I am excited for a great school year and look forward to working with you! God's Blessings on your weekend!
Yours in Christ,
Kim Myers

The First Day of School is Almost Here! :)

Welcome to our classroom web page!
